The US studio DreamWorks, together with Universal Pictures, has announced an animated film under the title "Donkey," in which Eddie Murphy will once again take on the voice role of the title-giving Donkey from the "Shrek" franchise; the film is scheduled to be released in theaters in June 2028.

The announcement marks the first major filmic return of the "Shrek" universe since the franchise's last main installment. At the center is the chaotically talkative Donkey, who appeared in all four "Shrek" films between 2001 and 2010 as the loyal companion of the green ogre alongside Shrek. Now the character, whom Eddie Murphy has portrayed for nearly three decades with quick wit and a voice that fills the room, is getting his own film.
