Egypt's national football coach Hossam Hassan made a controversial "X" gesture toward French referee François Letexier shortly before the final whistle in the World Cup match against Argentina (2-3) and subsequently lashed out at the official with sharp accusations.

The match between Argentina and Egypt ended in favor of the South Americans 3-2 late on Tuesday evening. But the sporting result faded into the background after the final whistle, when Egypt's 59-year-old coach Hossam Hassan caused a stir with a gesture that has already generated negative headlines in the football world. Shortly before the end of the encounter, Hassan formed an "X" with his forearms and directed the gesture pointedly toward French referee François Letexier.

Background: What Does the "X" Gesture Mean?

The gesture is internationally known for drawing attention to alleged racist incidents. Hassan, however, used it in a different context: It recalls an action by which José Mourinho once criticized a referee. The Portuguese coach had used the gesture to accuse an official of wearing "handcuffs" and to claim outside influence. Mourinho was subsequently suspended for three matches in 2010.
