EHEC Detection at Göttingen Manufacturer: Fleischwaren Wulff Recalls Numerous Raw Sausages

Also being recalled are Schinken-Zwiebelmettwurst 500g, fresh - batches 621303, 621304, and Delikatess Schinken Zwiebelmettwurst 200g fresh (batch 622504). Additionally, Schinken-Zwiebelmettwurst 500g, fresh (batch 622505), Zwiebelmettwurst 500g fresh (batch 622506), as well as Zwiebelmettwurst 500g frozen (batch 622507) are affected.

Also on the list are Bierknacker 4x60g (batch 622510), Schinken Pfefferlinge im Saitling 10/50g (batch 622511), Mettpeitschen 45g (batch 622512), Streichmettwurst grob or Knoblauch Hörnchen 2x approx. 300g - batch 621303, Pfefferlinge 6x50 gr., as well as the Schinken-Streichmettwurst Hörnchen 300g (batch 622501). The sausages should not be eaten. For some, the best-before date may have already passed.

Second Recall Within a Short Time

Earlier this month, the Göttingen district had already recalled raw sausages from Wulff Fleischwaren, including various Mettwürste. At that time, products such as Schinken-Streichmettwurst Hörnchen 300g - batch 622501, Zwiebelmettwurst 100g - batch 622502, and additional batches were affected. This is therefore the second recall within a short period.

What is EHEC and Who Is Particularly at Risk?

EHEC stands for enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli. According to the Robert Koch Institute, the bacteria can cause diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting — occasionally also fever. Infants, young children, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems are more likely to become seriously ill from an EHEC infection, according to the RKI.

The Robert Koch Institute advises seeking medical help promptly if suspicious symptoms appear. An EHEC infection can be mild but in some cases may lead to severe complications, including haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). Risk groups are particularly vulnerable.

What Consumers Can Do

Customers who have purchased any of the listed products can return them at the respective points of sale, according to the manufacturer and authorities. The purchase price will generally be refunded, even without presenting a receipt. Information on the exact return procedure is available from local retailers and from the notices on Lebensmittelwarnung.de.

Consumer protection organizations recommend neither eating nor disposing of affected products before consulting with the retailer. In case of uncertainty, the consumer advice centers and the Lebensmittelwarnung.de hotline can help. Social media is also being used for information.

The Göttingen district is monitoring the case and is in close contact with the manufacturer. Additional products may still be added based on the current status of the investigation. An official statement from the company was not available at editorial deadline.

The incidents are part of a series of food recalls in recent years in which pathogens such as salmonella or listeria were found in meat and sausage products. As recently as June this year, cheese products had been recalled in several federal states due to suspected listeria contamination.
