Eichbaum Brewery ceases operations: Rescue of Mannheim's traditional brewery finally fails

In the morning, a large assembly had taken place at Mannheim City Hall on the initiative of the works council and the NGG. Participants included Lord Mayor Christian Specht (CDU), representatives of the creditors, the insolvency administrator, and the University Hospital as a potential interested party. The aim of the meeting was to gain an overview of the current state of affairs and to explore avenues for the employees.

Following the assembly, the works council informed the Eichbaum workforce about the current state of affairs at a staff meeting at noon. Employees were told that dismissals are to be issued shortly. The remaining 240 staff members are thus immediately threatened with the loss of their jobs.

NGG criticizes information policy

The NGG expressed outrage at management's information policy. NGG state chairman Hakan Ulucay stated: "Nach den uns dort vorgelegten Informationen sehen sowohl wir als auch der Betriebsrat kaum noch eine realistische Perspektive für den Erhalt des traditionsreichen Brauereistandorts Mannheim." The union criticized that an official communication from management to the works council and the workforce "steht noch aus" (is still pending).

Stephanie Albicker of the NGG region Mannheim-Heidelberg demanded full transparency as to why hopes of a rescue had been raised just two weeks ago and why the announced financing of a transfer company now threatens to fail. The union also made clear that the failure is not attributable to the employees: It has "nicht an den Beschäftigten gelegen, dass die Eichbaum-Brauerei vor dem Aus stehe."

Demand for social plan and transfer company

The NGG has meanwhile called for swift negotiations on a social plan in order to cushion the consequences for the affected employees. A transfer company could help organize the transition into new employment relationships. Whether and in what form this can still succeed remained unclear on Monday.

The City of Mannheim announced that it would likely issue a statement on the situation at Eichbaum on Tuesday. The political assessment of the end of one of the region's most traditional breweries therefore remains to be seen.

The private brewery Eichbaum is one of Mannheim's oldest brewing establishments and has for years been a fixture of the regional beverage landscape. With the now announced end of business operations, another chapter in its decline— which had begun with the company's insolvency— comes to a close. The precise economic background of the failure is expected to be fully analyzed only in the coming weeks.
