Eight-month-old boy locks himself in car in Upper Franconia and is freed after around 15 minutes

Since the father did not have a spare key within reach, he alerted the fire department. Responding forces then broke a window of the car to get the child out of the interior. After about 15 minutes, the boy was able to be freed, as police further reported.

Why a car in the sun becomes a trap

Rescue workers and police emphasized that the child survived the incident without health consequences. "Der acht Monate alte Junge blieb den Angaben zufolge unverletzt", the investigators said. According to reports, the infant did not have to be taken to a hospital after being freed.

The case sheds light on a risk that emergency services in Germany regularly describe: Even at outside temperatures around 25 degrees Celsius, the interior of a car can heat up to well above 40 degrees within just a few minutes. Experts therefore warn against leaving children – and also animals – in parked vehicles, even briefly, or giving them the key to play with.

What concrete consequences the incident will have for the father is still unclear, according to police. The authority merely referred to the investigations into the exact course of events. In comparable cases, criminal proceedings for negligent bodily harm or neglect of persons in need of protection repeatedly occur, but so far the police in Rödental have not provided any information on this.

Regardless, aid organizations point to simple precautionary measures: spare keys should be carried, or the car should be parked in the shade during hot weather. Experts also advise against giving young children car keys to play with under any circumstances, as modern central locking systems can often be activated at the push of a button.

Status of the investigation

The fire department in Rödental said it took the operation as an opportunity to once again draw attention to the issue of "forgotten or locked children in cars." Even though the boy came out of this case relatively unscathed, such an incident can become life-threatening at higher temperatures and longer waiting times.

The exact time of the incident was given by police as Saturday morning. According to investigators, the vehicle was parked in the sun – how long it had already been parked there before the boy triggered the central locking system remained unclear. Police ruled out a technical defect in the locking system as far as is currently known.
