Bochum takes their chance with ice-cold finishing

Bochum, who had yet to pick up any points after their opening fixture the previous weekend, looked compact and defensively solid over long stretches. Coach Peter Neururer had set the team up primarily for counter-attacks and a tight spatial occupation in midfield. In the second half, the visitors increased the pressure and created several promising chances of their own.

The decisive goal was scored, around a quarter of an hour before the final whistle, by the Bochum attacker following a cross from the right. The ball found a recipient in the centre, who tucked it home from close range to make it 1:0. For Braunschweig, who threw everything forward in the closing stages, the defeat came in a phase in which the team is aiming at the promotion goal and remaining in the upper half of the table.

Reactions after the match

After the final whistle, the disappointment was palpable in the stadium. From a sporting perspective, the result puts Braunschweig's start to the season to a stern test: if the goal of soon looking towards the top group again is to be realised, points are urgently needed in the coming weeks. Bochum, for their part, celebrated their first win of the season and temporarily moved off the bottom of the table.

Relief was the prevailing mood on the VfL side after the final whistle. Coach Peter Neururer, speaking in the mixed zone, did not talk of a preliminary decision in the relegation battle, but stressed: „Der erste Sieg gibt der Mannschaft Selbstvertrauen, das werden wir mitnehmen."

Outlook on the next matchday

On the Braunschweig side, the head coach already turned his attention to what lies ahead. The team had „nicht mehr die Klarheit gehabt, die wir brauchen, um hier etwas Zählbares mitzunehmen", it was said. The task now was to learn from the mistakes without slipping into panic.

In the table, Braunschweig drops to a mid-table place following the defeat, while VfL Bochum can provisionally pull clear of the foot of the standings. As early as next weekend, the Lower Saxony side are away at 1. FC Magdeburg, before hosting St. Pauli.

For Bochum, meanwhile, a home match is on the agenda, where they will be looking to follow up. Coach and team know that an away win in Braunschweig does not yet mark a turnaround at the foot of the table – but after the first 45 minutes of the new season, the direction at least seems right.
