Eli Lilly and Boehringer Ingelheim announced on Wednesday that they are pulling back roughly 2.15 billion euros in planned investments in Germany, blaming federal austerity measures for the pharmaceutical industry and pressure from the United States.

Eli Lilly said it will complete only the minimum scope of its Alzey site in Rhineland-Palatinate, cutting the project roughly in half from the originally announced 2.5 billion euros. A spokesperson for Eli Lilly said the detailed implications of the decision would be clarified in the coming weeks and that the company remains open to constructive dialogue. The company stated that money not invested in Alzey will instead flow to Pennsylvania or a new site, possibly in the United Kingdom or Canada.
