US actress Ellen Burstyn will be honored with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 83rd Venice Film Festival (September 2 to 12).

As the Biennale di Venezia announced on Tuesday, the 93-year-old actress will receive the award as part of the screening of the short film "Flesh Impact." Festival director Alberto Barbera praised the actress as one of the most significant figures in American cinema. He explained that, over more than five decades, Burstyn had embodied female characters of extraordinary depth and authenticity and had shaped generations of filmmakers.

Burstyn reacted to the honor with great joy. "Ich fühle mich zutiefst geehrt, glücklich und voller Dankbarkeit", the actress said. She also stated that she looked forward to returning to Venice to accept the Golden Lion. Venice was one of her absolute favorite cities in the world, she added. She announced that she would travel to the lagoon city in person for the ceremony in September.
