In the round of 16 at the World Cup in North America, England defeated the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 (0-1) and has advanced to the quarterfinals against co-host Mexico, with captain Harry Kane turning the match around with two goals in the closing stages.

Early Deficit and a Gritty First Half

In front of 68,239 spectators at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday evening, a match unfolded that demanded a great deal from the English co-favorites over long stretches. Referee Adham Makhadmeh from Jordan kicked off the round-of-16 encounter, and as early as the 7th minute, Thomas Tuchel's side, led by the Swabian coach of the Three Lions, fell behind.

Brian Cipenga, a 28-year-old winger from the Spanish second division, latched onto a long ball, controlled it, and finished from the left side with a low shot into the near corner to make it 1-0 for DR Congo. It was his first goal in the jersey of the national team, which is led by captain Chancel Mbemba. For England's goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who had already struggled with the delivery beforehand, the shot likely could have been saved.
