According to a media report, the English Football Association (FA) is considering filing an appeal against Jarell Quansah's red card in the World Cup round of 16 against Mexico (3:2), drawing on the Folarin Balogun case, whose match suspension was commuted to probation by FIFA following intervention from US President Donald Trump.

The situation is delicate. Quansah, currently under contract with Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, was shown the red card in the 54th minute after referee Alireza Faghani of Iran, acting on a hint from the video assistant, retroactively decided on a sending-off – even though no personal sanction had initially been given on the field. England played the remaining time a man down and, despite the 3:2 victory, advanced to the next round, but with a suspension for the center-back in the upcoming match.
