FIFA lifted the ban imposed against US striker Folarin Balogun for a red card on Sunday evening (local time), converting it to a one-year probation, after US President Donald Trump personally intervened with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, according to consistent media reports.

Balogun was thus permitted to play again slightly more than 24 hours before the US World Cup Round of 16 match against Belgium (Tuesday, 2:00 AM CEST) at Lumen Field in Seattle. The 25-year-old center forward from AS Monaco had been sent off in the Round of 32 against Bosnia-Herzegovina (2-0) after a stamp on the ankle of Tarik Muharemovic by Brazilian referee Raphael Claus following a VAR on-field review.
