Pubs and bars across England will be allowed to stay open until 5 a.m. on Monday after the government cleared a licensing extension to cover England's World Cup round-of-16 match against Mexico, which kicks off at 1 a.m. local time.
Background: how the licensing rule works
The decision, confirmed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office, means that venues will not have to apply individually to local councils for a late-licence permit for the single night. According to the government, the Home Secretary has the statutory authority to extend opening hours for events of "außergewöhnlicher internationaler, nationaler oder lokaler Bedeutung." Without the relaxation, knockout matches kicking off between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. are normally permitted an extension only until 2 a.m.
