Millions of Ethiopians are called to vote for a new national parliament this Monday, while Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed seeks a third term in an environment marked by poverty, regional tensions, and a weakened opposition.
According to the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), around 50 million people have registered to vote. More than 10,400 candidates from various parties, as well as independent contenders, are running at federal and regional levels to win the 502 parliamentary seats.
However, the election is taking place under difficult conditions. The Ethiopian newspaper "The Reporter" states that authorities have not announced the locations of approximately 30,000 out of the total 52,000 polling stations. Human rights groups anticipate significant disruptions to the electoral process, similar to the 2021 elections.
