Algiers, July 2, 2026
In Algeria's parliamentary election on Thursday, more than 10,000 candidates on hundreds of lists competed for 407 seats in the National People's Assembly.
The campaign lasted around three weeks and took candidates through cities and villages. The focus was on issues such as purchasing power, rising prices, youth unemployment, and social justice. Algerian-Swiss political scientist Hasni Abidi said a further drop in turnout would not only reflect deep dissatisfaction but would also amount to a slap in the face for the governing elites.
Turnout as a Yardstick
Analysts expect turnout to once again be low. In the previous 2021 parliamentary election, turnout stood at just 23 percent of eligible voters — a historic low. Observers view the vote less as a directional decision than as a barometer of the mood in the relationship between the population and the political class.
