After a green shimmering emerald ash borer was caught in a pheromone trap in Hungary, the EU has activated emergency quarantine measures, prompting Austria to also intensify its surveillance and place an emergency plan on standby.
The emerald ash borer is originally from Asia and has now been detected in the EU area for the first time in Hungary. "Ein grün schillernder Käfer krabbelte in Ungarn in eine Lockstofffalle - und die Europäische Union reagierte mit Quarantäne-Notfallmaßnahmen." Shortly afterwards, 18 additional specimens were discovered in Slovakia. The recent beetle discovery sites in Hungary and Slovakia are located on the Ukrainian border and are approximately 60 kilometers apart.
