On Tuesday, the EU Commission adopted new exemptions from the battery regulation, thereby expanding the list of products with permanently installed batteries by six categories, including smartwatches and fitness trackers.

The EU is expanding the exemption list to include six product categories. The exempted products now also include smartwatches and fitness trackers. The EU Commission announced this on Tuesday in Brussels.

Background: The EU Battery Regulation

The background to the regulation is the EU Battery Regulation, which officially enters into force on February 18, 2027. The EU Battery Regulation will henceforth stipulate that batteries in products sold in the EU must generally be removable and replaceable by the consumer. This is intended to extend the lifespan of products and also promotes recycling, as the collection of used batteries is facilitated, it says.
