Brussels, 11 July 2026
The EU Commission has opened an investigation into the planned acquisition of the German furniture retailer Porta by the Austrian furniture group XXXLutz, examining whether the deal violates EU law.
The planned transaction between XXXLutz and Porta was publicly announced in early January 2025 but has not yet been formally notified to the EU Commission. The Brussels competition authority stated that it has now initiated an investigation to determine whether the acquisition violates EU rules.
According to the Commission's preliminary assessment, this transaction is of EU-wide significance and would need to be notified to the Commission, according to the statement. Brussels is thus actively taking up the deal, even though formal notification by the companies is still pending.
The Commission is examining whether the acquisition could violate EU competition law. Should the competition watchdogs find a violation, they could impose a fine of up to 10 percent of the companies' global group turnover.
