The EU Commission has presented a proposal to ban payments to smugglers and criminal networks and to freeze their assets, as EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner announced.

The EU Commission wants to cut off smuggling organizations from their financial means going forward. The plan envisages a ban on all payments to persons and organizations placed on a new list of criminal networks. At the same time, the assets of these listed actors are to be frozen in order to undermine their ability to act.

EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner described the proposal as a necessary step against organized crime. People smuggling and human trafficking had meanwhile become "a lucrative part of organized crime". Money is "something that hurts the criminals", Brunner said according to the available reports.
