Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that the federal government takes the incident "extremely seriously." The government is in close exchange with European partners and is examining all options to respond to the threat. At the same time, he called for composure and warned against premature conclusions while the investigations are still ongoing. The security authorities are working at full speed to analyze the drone wreckage and possible traces.

Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced that protective measures for critical infrastructure in Germany would be intensified. Airports, railway lines, and logistics centers are to be monitored even more intensively in the future. Dobrindt pointed out that the security situation in Europe was already tense given Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. The incident in Leipzig once again demonstrates how vulnerable infrastructure can be, even in peacetime.

Reactions from the Federal and State Governments

At the meeting in Brussels, several EU foreign ministers expressed concern about the possible implications for internal European security. Representatives of eastern member states called for a joint European response, while other governments urged restraint. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas spoke of a "wake-up call" for the European security architecture and announced that the issue would be addressed again at the next EU summit.

The Federal Prosecutor General is working together with the Federal Criminal Police Office and the state criminal police offices, according to its own statements. The incident raises fundamental questions about aviation security and the protection of critical infrastructure.

The question of possible additional sanctions against Russia was also discussed in Brussels. Several foreign ministers spoke out in favor of specifically expanding the EU sanctions framework should the suspicion of Russian involvement be substantiated. Others warned against escalation and favored the diplomatic route.

The Federal Prosecutor General emphasized in conclusion that the investigations are proceeding in all directions. It is being examined whether this was a targeted attack, a test, or an accident. Reliable statements regarding perpetrators, motive, and those who commissioned the act can only be made after completion of the forensic and criminal-technical examinations.
