The European Union has initiated a procedure to ban the Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) party, a right-wing populist group linked to the German AfD party, due to alleged violations of EU fundamental values.
The EU's Authority for European Political Parties and Foundations has identified indications of possible violations of EU fundamental values by the ESN party, which has 27 members in the European Parliament.
The procedure was launched after the Authority received a letter from the European Commission, which highlighted court decisions critical of individual member parties, such as the AfD, as well as social media posts with antisemitic and anti-LGBTQ rhetoric.
Background
The ESN party was co-founded by the AfD and includes members from other right-wing populist parties, such as the French Reconquête and the Polish New Hope.
