Eurobarometer: EU seen as anchor of stability by majority – Approval rises in Austria

Mood in Austria above-average optimistic

In a country comparison, Austria stands out with above-average optimism about the future: 58 percent of Austrians look forward to a positive future for the EU, and as many as 81 percent are optimistic about the personal future of their family. Nevertheless, 38 percent of Austrian respondents expect their own standard of living to deteriorate over the coming five years; 46 percent expect no change.

When asked about the most important tasks for strengthening the EU, 32 percent of Austrians cited defence and security. For 33 percent, however, independence in energy and other resources is of even greater importance. 38 percent are convinced that the EU contributes to strengthening peace and security.

Security and economic growth as central issues

As direct benefits of EU membership, Austrian respondents see above all the EU's contribution to economic growth (33 percent), new employment opportunities (30 percent), as well as improved cooperation with other EU states (27 percent). The answers thus reflect a broad spectrum of economic and political expectations.

When asked how quality of life in the EU could be improved, 43 percent of Austrian respondents place the management of the cost of living first. The issue thus takes priority over other areas of political action and underscores the concern of many citizens in the face of rising prices.

Reform demands on the European Parliament

The survey also provides indications of institutional reform desires: 49 percent of Austrians advocate that the European Parliament should play a more important role. This could point to growing expectations of stronger parliamentary participation.

Overall, the survey paints a picture of a population that is fundamentally positive toward the EU, but at the same time feels unsettled by international developments. The combination of growing approval of membership, high personal life satisfaction, and widespread concern about the future points to a stable but differentiated public opinion.

Methodology of the survey

The methodological note of the study points out that the survey took place during a period of international tensions. These contextual conditions may have additionally reinforced the assessment of the EU as a factor of stability.

The results are being cited in public debate as an argument for the continuation of European integration, but at the same time as a warning to take citizens' concerns about the cost of living and security seriously.
