A court in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen has sentenced Hui Ka Yan, founder of the embattled property developer China Evergrande Group, to life in prison on fraud-related charges stemming from the company's multibillion-dollar collapse.
The verdict, announced on Tuesday and reported by state news agency Xinhua, found Hui guilty of crimes connected to Evergrande's runaway borrowing and the broader crisis that engulfed China's property sector. The ruling marked one of the most consequential corporate criminal judgments in the country in decades and capped a years-long legal saga over the developer's demise.
