Hong Kong, 21 August 2026
A Hong Kong court ordered the liquidation of the parent group of Evergrande in 2024 after the company and its creditors failed to agree on a restructuring of its debts, closing a chapter on one of China's largest corporate failures.
Background to the case
The winding-up order was issued after repeated attempts to broker a deal between the company and its creditors collapsed. Once listed in Hong Kong and incorporated in the Cayman Islands, the Evergrande parent group had become the focal point of a multibillion-dollar restructuring effort that ultimately could not be completed.
The decision by the Hong Kong court followed months of negotiations in which the company sought to convince creditors to accept a plan that would have allowed the business to continue operating while repaying part of its obligations. With no agreement in place, the judge ruled that liquidation was the appropriate outcome.
