Damascus, July 2, 2026

A bomb explosion at a busy café in the center of the Syrian capital Damascus killed at least five people and injured 16 others on Thursday.

According to the Syrian Health Ministry, the improvised explosive device detonated at a café near the Palace of Justice. The Health Ministry stated: „16 weitere seien verletzt worden, teilte das Gesundheitsministerium heute mit." The state news agency SANA reported the casualty numbers citing the emergency services on Thursday: „wie die staatliche Nachrichtenagentur Sana unter Berufung auf den Rettungsdienst am Donnerstag meldete."

The Syrian government spoke of at least five people killed, including – according to initial findings – passers-by who had been at the café. The exact backgrounds of the victims – whether they were employees, students or other visitors – remained unclear at first. A video circulating on social networks showed several injured, bloodied people lying in the café.
