Explosion in Damascus kills at least five – no claim of responsibility

The café is located in a busy district not far from the Palace of Justice, which is one of the central administrative buildings of the Syrian capital. The area contains law offices, government agencies and shops. Residents reported that the explosion occurred in broad daylight and that passers-by panicked.

According to the Health Ministry, the injured received immediate medical care. Several hospitals in Damascus made additional capacity available. The Red Crescent as well as local aid organizations supported the rescue operations. No detailed information on the condition of the seriously injured was initially available.

Reactions from the transitional government

The Syrian transitional government condemned the attack and announced enhanced security measures for public spaces. Government spokespersons said the perpetrators would be brought to justice. At the same time, they called on the population to remain vigilant and asked that any suspicious observations be reported to the authorities.

International observers pointed out that the stabilization of Syria remains a long-term process. The latest violence shows that individual groups are seeking to undermine the transition to an orderly post-war order. Diplomats from several countries expressed their condolences to the families of the victims.
