Investigators from the Operational Group for the Combating of Street Crime (EGS) arrested a 35-year-old Austrian citizen in Vienna-Meidling on Thursday who is alleged to have posed as a police officer and thereby obtained around €70,000.

The arrest was preceded by several weeks of investigative work. According to findings by the State Criminal Police Office of Vienna, the suspect allegedly assumed the identity of a police officer when making contact with potential victims and, under this pretext, demanded large sums of cash. The Vienna Public Prosecutor's Office accuses the man of aggravated fraud.

Investigators pursued the suspicion that the suspect subsequently transferred the money obtained to his own account at a bank. The exact modalities of the money flows are the subject of ongoing investigations. Specific information regarding the number of those affected or the chronological sequence of the acts has not been made public by the investigating authorities to date.
