A father from the Netherlands asked the parents of the invited children to contribute €1.83 per child to the costs following his son's birthday party in a class WhatsApp group, triggering a debate about etiquette and the phenomenon of "going Dutch."
On the day of the party, the man sent a message to the parents of the invited children. "Dear parents, for today's small treat I spent a bit more than planned," he wrote in the class WhatsApp group, explaining: "That comes to €1.83 per child." At the same time, he sent a corresponding payment link through which parents could have transferred the amount.
The message caused bewilderment. Many of the parents who were contacted initially thought it was a joke. "At first I thought it was a joke, but no!" an affected mother later wrote on the Dutch parenting platform Mamaplaats. Reactions ranged from outrage to equanimity: while some called the payment request impolite, others said there was no need to start a fight over €1.83.
