FC Thun has been eliminated in the second qualifying round of the Champions League, losing the away leg against Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb 2:3 after extra time despite having held a 2:0 lead.
Lightning start and headed one-two
After the 1:1 first leg, the Bernese Oberlanders travelled to Zagreb in confident mood – and made a dream start at the Maksimir Stadium. After just four minutes, Brighton Labeau opened the scoring, tapping in a low cross from new signing Nassim Zoukit, who had arrived from Aarau, from close range. In the 22nd minute it was Bürki who headed in a cross from Fabio Fehr at the back post.
At that point Thun were still leading 2:0, but the sending-off was to be the beginning of the end. Captain Marco Bürki had given the ball away just outside his own penalty area and then held back his opponent in a promising position. After VAR intervention, the referee changed his original decision from yellow to red. Bürki was shown a red card in the 67th minute.
