Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker has accused the FPÖ in an interview of wanting "only destruction," thereby further intensifying the conflict with FPÖ chief Herbert Kickl.

In the conversation published on Thursday, Stocker commented unusually harshly on the coalition partner. He said: "Die FPÖ will nur die Zerstörung" and meant by that the political style and the programmatic stance of the Freedom Party under the leadership of Herbert Kickl. The Federal Chancellor justified his choice of words with reference to past conflicts and ruptures in the governmental cooperation.

Stocker pointed out that the FPÖ had already caused instability in earlier government participations. The statement was, from his perspective, the result of a longer observation of the Freedom Party's political behavior, he said. Cooperation on an equal footing with Kickl's FPÖ is no longer possible, according to the Chancellor's assessment.
