Background: What is Plantation Simulator?

The proceedings were triggered by a game called Plantation Simulator. Following its release, the game drew sharp international criticism. In its original version, players took over the management of a historical plantation, with enslaved Black people depicted as laborers. Certain gameplay mechanics were tied to the punishment of these individuals.

Following protests, the game was initially modified and later removed from Steam entirely. The developer pulled the game after public backlash. However, the Federal Network Agency stressed that the investigation is not intended to determine whether the game's content was unlawful. "Ultimately, only courts could decide that," the agency stated.
