Berlin, July 6, 2026
In the first half of 2026, the Federal Police registered 24,329 unauthorized entries into Germany – corresponding to a decline of 22 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.
Since September 16, 2024, border controls on entry have been in place again at all German national borders, the authority announced. Previously, these had already been partially in effect. The controls go back to an order from the Federal Ministry of the Interior, which aims to more strongly curb the number of unauthorized entries.
Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) had intensified the controls – originally introduced under the previous "Ampel" coalition government – immediately after taking office in May of last year and instructed the Federal Police to henceforth also turn away asylum seekers – with exceptions for members of vulnerable groups, which include, for example, sick or pregnant individuals.
