The number of first-time asylum applications in Germany fell in May to the lowest monthly figure since the pandemic year 2020.
As the Federal Ministry of the Interior announced, around 5,600 first-time applications were registered with the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) last month. This is about 30 percent less than in May of the previous year. In April, the number had already remained significantly below the previous year's level with 6,144 applications.
Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) expressed satisfaction with the development. "The migration turnaround is continuing," he stated. The goal of the black-red federal government remains "to effectively manage migration and further reduce burdens."
