The reaction from the Presidential Office in Kyiv to Fedorov's remarks was initially restrained. Spokespersons merely said they took note of the views of former government members. Observers interpret the silence as an attempt to avoid an open debate over the conduct of the war, which during wartime is seen as a risk to the morale of the population and the troops.

At the same time, Fedorov's move comes at a time when the international debate over peace negotiations is gaining momentum. According to a BBC report, the Vatican, through its diplomat Gallagher, once again issued an appeal to the parties to the conflict to enter into "real negotiations with the support of the international community." This was coupled with the indication that the spiral of violence could not otherwise be stopped.

Fedorov himself belongs to a new generation of Ukrainian politicians who had built their careers in the digital economy and the technology sector before the war. He took over the Defence Ministry at a time when the modernization of the armed forces and the digitalization of administration were seen as central tasks. After leaving office, he increasingly positioned himself as a commentator and critic.

His call for elections stands in contrast to the line previously taken by the Ukrainian leadership, which, citing martial law, had extended the terms of Zelensky and parliament. Critics accuse the government of increasingly hollowing out democratic oversight. Supporters counter that elections under wartime conditions are neither safe nor logistically feasible.

How deep the rift running through the Ukrainian political class runs is difficult to gauge at present. On social media, the BBC interview triggered heated debate: while supporters of Fedorov demanded more transparency and an honest assessment of the situation, government loyalists accused him of playing into the enemy's hands. No official statement from Zelensky himself had been issued as of the latest reports.

International observers are following the developments with concern, but also with interest. For Western supporters, the question of whether Ukraine is defending its democratic institutions even under wartime conditions is a benchmark for the country's long-term stability. Should the debate over elections and the course of the war sharpen further, it could also influence the discussion about new military aid in Washington and in European capitals.
