Five dead after swimming accident in Ohio's Scioto River – two children placed in social services care

Course of the tragedy

Language barrier complicates investigation

As U.S. media reported, citing the sheriff, a language barrier is complicating the investigation. Accordingly, some family members communicated only to a limited extent in English, which is why sworn interpreters had to be brought in to translate the statements of the children and relatives for the investigators.

The Scioto River flows through the central and southern part of Ohio and empties into the Ohio River near Portsmouth. At several sections there are swimming spots, but local authorities repeatedly warn of unpredictable currents, changing water depths, and submerged obstacles.

The incident triggered dismay in Ohio. Mayors and police chiefs of surrounding communities expressed their condolences to the victims' families. A memorial service on the banks of the Scioto River is planned for the coming days, according to local authorities.

The authorities asked the public to submit any information that could help clarify the circumstances to the Franklin County Police Department. Balzer announced that the investigators want to publish initial results on the cause of death this week.
