Flash flood along Himalayan border sweeps away villages in Nepal and Tibet

Near the border, officials said entire villages had been washed away, while roads, bridges and hydropower stations sustained heavy damage. The flooding struck in a remote, mountainous stretch of the central Himalayas where communications are limited, complicating early assessments of the toll.

Destruction along the Bhotekoshi

Beijing's government initially declined to comment on the number of dead and injured. "Zur Zahl der Toten und Verletzten äußerte sich die Regierung in Peking zunächst nicht," a Chinese government statement read, leaving a vacuum of information on the Chinese side of the border as the scale of the disaster emerged.

On the Nepali side, authorities and security forces moved quickly into search-and-rescue operations. The military said it had deployed personnel to affected areas along the Bhotekoshi, where riverside settlements were the hardest hit. Rescue teams reported difficult conditions as debris-clogged channels and damaged bridges hampered access.

Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah was briefed on the situation, while China's official Xinhua news agency carried reports from the Tibetan side of the frontier, including from the Gyirong border area. The flow of information from Chinese authorities remained limited in the immediate aftermath, with state media providing only sparse casualty figures.

Search and rescue under way

Witnesses described scenes of panic as the floodwaters surged through valleys downstream of the Himalayan headwaters. "Die Menschen fingen an zu schreien und rannten davon," the local official said, underscoring how little warning residents received before the torrent arrived.

Officials cautioned that the death toll could rise sharply once communications are restored with the more remote villages cut off by the flooding. Relief agencies said priority needs included shelter, clean water and medical care for displaced residents on both sides of the border.

Limited information from Beijing

Chinese President Xi Jinping's government faced questions about its public response, given the sensitivity of the Himalayan frontier region. Analysts noted that Beijing has historically been cautious about reporting casualty figures from border areas involving ethnic Tibetan populations, and the lack of an initial comment from Peking fit that pattern.

By Tuesday, Nepali authorities said they were still trying to reach villages along the upper Bhotekoshi that had been cut off by landslides triggered by the flood. Cross-border trade through the Gyirong corridor, a key overland route between Nepal and China, was suspended pending safety checks.

International humanitarian organizations monitoring the situation said they were in contact with authorities in Kathmandu and stood ready to assist. The Nepali government appealed for calm and warned residents in downstream districts to remain on alert for further surges, as water levels in the Bhotekoshi remained dangerously high.
