Flood risk in the Alps rising – Study published in Science Advances

The Alps stretch across several countries, including Switzerland and Austria, and are among the most densely populated and economically used mountain regions in Europe. Rising flood risk has direct consequences there for valleys, infrastructure, agriculture, and tourism.

The study was published in the renowned journal Science Advances. It thus underwent a scientific peer-review process and is considered peer-reviewed, which increases the significance of the findings for the expert community and authorities.

Significance for Switzerland and Austria

The issue is of particular relevance for Switzerland, because numerous rivers there are of Alpine origin and the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) regularly issues flood forecasts. In Austria as well, Alpine regions are among the areas most affected by weather extremes.

According to the researchers, changes were examined at different flood recurrence intervals. It was found that the frequency of moderate events decreases in mountain regions, while extreme floods may occur less frequently but with greater intensity.

Possible causes of the changes

The scientists see possible causes in altered precipitation patterns, rising temperatures, and the associated changes in runoff behavior in glaciated and snow-rich catchment areas. These factors influence how quickly and in what quantities water travels from mountain regions to lower-lying areas.

For the population, the finding means that existing protection concepts and early warning systems may need to be adapted. Extreme floods pose particular challenges for municipalities, emergency services, and insurers, as damage often rises sharply.

Consequences for protection and prevention

The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) in Davos is among the institutions in Switzerland that deal with hydrological questions of Alpine catchment areas. Such research institutions provide the data basis on which authorities can further develop protective measures.

The study's authors emphasize that the observed trends can vary regionally. Blanket statements for the entire Alpine arc are therefore only possible to a limited extent; what is decisive is the consideration of individual catchment areas and their specific hydrological dynamics.

Overall, the investigation provides a warning signal: even if moderate floods become less frequent in mountain regions, the danger posed by extreme events must not be underestimated. Adapting to changed risks remains an ongoing task for science, administration, and the public.
