A study published in the journal Science Advances concludes that flood risk in the Alpine region will rise in the future, with extreme floods increasing more than moderate ones.

Researchers have examined the development of flood events in the Alpine region and arrive at a nuanced finding: overall, flood risk in the Alps will increase in the future, although the trend differs noticeably depending on the intensity of the events. While moderate floods, such as so-called two-year floods, continue to decline in the mountains, extreme events show an opposing trend.

Difference between moderate and extreme floods

"Extreme Ereignisse verändern sich stärker als moderate Hochwasser," explained the study's first author, Paul Astagneau, in a press release. This statement underscores the central finding of the investigation: not all types of floods are developing in the same way, and it is precisely the rare, all the more consequential events that deserve particular attention.
