Cologne, 31 August 2026

Foreign direct investment in Germany rose by around 50 percent to approximately 74 billion euros in the first half of 2026, according to calculations by the German Economic Institute (IW) Cologne.

Great Britain Overtakes the USA

As the IW Cologne announced on Monday, approximately 74 billion euros flowed from abroad to Germany between January and June 2026. This means the volume of foreign direct investment is roughly half above the figure for the same period last year, the institute said in response to a query. The number of investment projects also rose significantly, according to the institute.

The strongest increase came from Great Britain: Investors from the United Kingdom increased their commitment by around 270 percent to approximately 15 billion euros, thereby displacing the USA from first place. The United States remains the second-largest investor, however, with investments of just under eleven billion euros. A total of around 41 billion euros flowed to Germany from Europe, corresponding to roughly 55 percent of the total.
