Frankfurt am Main, 01 July 2026
The state development bank KfW has determined in its 2026 company survey that 92 percent of German companies see a need for investment, but only 57 percent actually invested in the past year.
A total of 1,567 companies from 19 umbrella, sector, and regional business associations took part in the survey. The poll was conducted for the 23rd time among companies of all size classes, sectors, legal forms, and regions, and was carried out between early March and the end of April 2026. It essentially reflects the situation and sentiment in 2025 and at the beginning of 2026.
The result is markedly more pessimistic than just two years ago. Only 57 percent of the companies surveyed made investments in the past year. This figure was even below the level of the crisis year 2009, when 68 percent still invested. At the same time, 92 percent of companies stated that they fundamentally have a need for investment.
