Munich, 08 July 2026

Former Wirecard chief Markus Braun, the main defendant in the long-running fraud trial in Munich, has told the court that the hardest part of his pretrial detention is being torn away from his family.

Braun, who has been held in pretrial custody at the Munich correctional facility Stadelheim since July 2020, used a questioning hearing on his personal circumstances to paint a picture of enforced isolation. “Die Hauptherausforderung ist, dass man komplett aus der Familie herausgerissen ist”, he said. He receives visits from his wife and eight-year-old daughter only once a month, according to reporting on his statements.
