At Basel Zoo, a four-day-old gorilla baby died after being bitten by its own father, Yeba, during a scuffle between its parents.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in the ape house of the Basel Zoo, as confirmed by the zoo's spokesperson, Stefan Leimer. The dead infant was the four-day-old baby of gorilla mother Joas and silverback Yeba. According to the zoo, the fatal bite was an "unintentional bite" to the infant's chest.

The bite occurred during disputes between Yeba and Joas over the baby. Joas had been carrying her offspring closely against her body since birth. On Tuesday, the father took the infant away from her and no longer allowed her near it.

On the same day, Yeba also bit a male companion named Mobali so severely that the animal had to be euthanized. The accumulation of incidents involving the same animal prompted the zoo to issue an initial statement.
