The offspring in Krenglbach is thus part of an internationally coordinated breeding program to secure the species.

Western Lowland Gorillas are critically endangered in the wild. The zoo points out that the animals are "in freier Wildbahn stark gefährdet sind". Every successful birth and rearing in human care is therefore considered an important contribution to species conservation.
