The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) celebrated its 70th anniversary on Tuesday in Vienna with a ceremonial act and an ensuing people's festival. The event formed the kickoff of the celebrations surrounding the party's founding anniversary, which in the 1950s had emerged from the Federation of Independents.
At the center of the program was a ceremonial act at Vienna's Hofburg, followed by a people's festival at Stephansplatz. With the dual staging of a dignified state ceremony and a festival close to the public, the party aimed, according to its own statements, to make visible both the historical significance of the anniversary and its bond with its supporters.
