France defeated Paraguay 1:0 (0:0) in the World Cup Round of 16 in Philadelphia, thereby advancing to the quarterfinals of a World Championship for the fourth consecutive time.

The decisive moment: Penalty after VAR review

In front of 68,324 spectators at the Philadelphia Stadium, a converted penalty by captain Kylian Mbappé decided the match. Referee Ilgiz Tantashev of Uzbekistan had awarded the penalty in the 67th minute following a video review, after substitute Désiré Doué was fouled in the box by Paraguay's Diego Gómez roughly five minutes after coming on.

Mbappé, who scored his seventh goal of the tournament, converted the penalty with a low shot into the bottom right corner, sending goalkeeper Orlando Gill the wrong way. „Captain Kylian Mbappé übernahm die Verantwortung und verlud Gill mit einem Flachschuss in die rechte Ecke“, the live ticker noted. „Schiedsrichter der Partie ist Ilgiz Tantashev aus Usbekistan.“
