The French, partly state-owned lottery giant FDJ United announced on Friday its intention to apply for Austria's expiring lottery concession.
FDJ United plans consortium with Austrian partners
This puts the company into a bidding field in which the US group Brightstar and the Izi Group from Malta have already signaled interest. The Österreichischen Lotterien, a subsidiary of Casinos Austria, want to defend their concession and additionally secure a license for online gambling. "Wir sind sehr interessiert an der Lizenz in Österreich und bereiten uns schon seit Längerem vor," said Giovanna D'Esposito, Chief Officer International Lottery of FDJ United, in an interview with KURIER.
According to its own statements, FDJ United has already established its own company in Austria. It is planned that the group will hold the majority stake in a consortium of local partners. Industry circles expect that possible Austrian partners will come from the banking, IT and retail sectors. "Das börsennotierte Unternehmen FDJ United ist in 13 Märkten in den Bereichen Lotterien, Onlineglücksspiel und Wetten aktiv," the company's press release states.
