The French National Assembly on Tuesday passed a bill that will allow adult patients suffering from a terminal-stage incurable illness to access assisted suicide.

What the Bill Is About

As Deutschlandfunk reported on June 30, 2026, with the vote the National Assembly cleared the way for a right to assisted dying. The corresponding text was adopted by the deputies on Tuesday. Under its provisions, adult patients suffering from an incurable illness in its terminal stage who are of sound mind will be able to request "aid in dying."

In most cases the law provides for a procedure equivalent to assisted suicide, although the word "suicide" does not appear literally in the text. In principle the patient is to take the lethal substance themselves. If they are physically unable to do so, a doctor or a nurse may assist.
