Essen, July 17, 2026

At the Frida-Levy-Gesamtschule in Essen, where more than 90 percent of the approximately 1,300 students have a migration background, 13 of 25 young people in class 10c achieved the grades required for the Abitur.

Class 10c is regarded within the school as a remarkable example of a successful educational path. According to a report by WDR reporter Katharina Stöger, broadcast on July 17, 2027 on WDR 5's Morgenecho, the 25 young people come from 16 different countries. Only one student in the class does not have a migration background. When the students were in fifth grade, "practically none of the children had the grades for Gymnasium."

School with the highest social index

The Frida-Levy-Gesamtschule is located near Essen's main train station. According to the WDR reporter, the buildings appear dilapidated, and the school has the highest school social index of "nine." A significant portion of the total 1,300 students receive state assistance. Over 90 percent of students at the Frida-Levy-Gesamtschule have a migration background; across North Rhine-Westphalia as a whole, according to statistics, about half of all students have an immigration history.
