Following the reduction of the state fuel price brake, fuel prices in Austria have risen again: diesel cost an average of 1.742 euros per liter on Thursday, while Eurosuper stood at 1.688 euros.
The fuel price brake, which had cushioned the rise in fuel costs over the past months, was extended in reduced form as of July 1, 2026. As figures from the state regulatory authority E-Control show, the reduction has had an immediate effect at the pumps: compared with the Tuesday before the adjustment, when diesel had still cost 1.707 euros and premium gasoline 1.660 euros, prices have moved noticeably upward.
Political reactions to the price increase
ÖAMTC criticized already on Thursday that the smaller tax sweetener had made itself felt immediately at the pumps. SPÖ, by contrast, emphasized that the fuel price brake is effective in any case. After all, the matter is not only about reducing the mineral oil tax by 0.8 cent per liter, fuel station operators must also pass on falling prices on the commodity markets.
