Fuel in Austria more expensive again: Price brake reduced, gasoline and diesel climb

The background to the debate is the development on international commodity markets. A barrel (159 liters) of the North Sea Brent grade for August delivery most recently cost 70.71 US dollars, which corresponds to 62.03 euros. The price of the global reference grade thus fell by around 1.2 percent. At times reaching 70.16 dollars, the oil price fell to its lowest level since the end of February 2026.

Crude oil market eases in price

The mineral oil tax cut as part of the price brake amounts to 0.8 cent per liter. It is intended to ensure that falling commodity prices are passed on to consumers. Fuel station operators are thus obliged to actually pass on falling purchase prices to end customers – a mechanism that is assessed differently in the political debate.

Within Austria, there are clear regional differences. In Burgenland, diesel cost 1.719 euros on Thursday, while in Tyrol it was 1.789 euros per liter. For premium gasoline, the price in Burgenland was 1.674 euros and in Tyrol 1.709 euros. The spread between the federal states is therefore noticeable for both diesel and gasoline.

Regional differences within Austria

A look across the borders shows that Austria occupies a middle position in a European comparison. Cheaper than at home, fuel is in the Czech Republic (diesel: 1.45 euros, Super 95: 1.59 euros), Slovenia (diesel: 1.68 euros, Super 95: 1.58 euros) and Croatia (diesel: 1.66 euros, Super 95: 1.61 euros). In all three countries, both diesel and Super are below the domestic level.

Comparison with neighboring countries

Refueling is more expensive than in Austria in Italy (diesel: 1.89 euros, Super 95: 1.81 euros), France (diesel: 1.87 euros, Super 95: 1.94 euros) and Germany (diesel: 1.76 euros, Super 95: 1.90 euros). Especially in France and Italy, both grades cost noticeably more than at domestic pumps.

Tips from ARBÖ for the travel season

Against the backdrop of the holiday season, ARBÖ looked at the current state of fuel prices in holiday destinations on Friday. ARBÖ press spokesperson Sebastian Obrecht advises: "Strategisches Tanken auf dem Weg ins Feriendomizil lohnt sich angesichts der unterschiedlich hohen Spritpreise in diesem Jahr besonders". His colleague adds: "Es macht sich auf jeden Fall bezahlt, vor der Abfahrt die Treibstoffpreise im Urlaubsland zu checken.

Especially motorists traveling toward the Czech Republic, Slovenia or Croatia can benefit accordingly. Obrecht recommends: "Wenn man in einem Staat mit günstigerem Sprit als in Österreich unterwegs ist, zahlt es sich natürlich aus, das Auto vor der Heim- oder Weiterreise noch vollzufüllen". A full tank can, depending on the route and consumption, avoid a three-digit euro amount in extra costs.

However, ARBÖ also warns against excessive detours: "Dies lohnt sich aufgrund des zusätzlichen Kraftstoffverbrauchs und wegen des höheren Zeitaufwands selten". Anyone who accepts a significant detour for a price advantage of just a few cents quickly consumes the savings through additional fuel consumption. A realistic calculation is therefore essential.

Outlook for the coming weeks

For the coming weeks, observers expect the price situation to remain tense. Although the crude oil price has recently fallen, passing it on to end customers depends on many factors – from fuel station operators and the margins of the oil companies to the exchange rates between the euro and the dollar. The pressure on policymakers to possibly extend or adjust the fuel price brake again is therefore likely to increase.

The debate about the fuel price brake is also a proxy for a larger debate about mobility costs in Austria. While commuters and families with several cars are particularly affected, owners of electric cars or users of public transport do not benefit directly from tax interventions in the fuel market.

For consumers, for now, only comparison remains: those who have the option of switching to alternative means of transport, bundling larger shopping trips by car, or optimizing their refueling strategy when traveling can partly cushion the additional costs. ARBÖ's appeals point to a long-known rule: comparing prices pays off – especially during the holiday season.

Overall, the current development shows how quickly political interventions in the fuel market become visible at the pumps – and how fragile confidence is in the passing on of price reductions. Whether the mineral oil tax cut of 0.8 cent per liter actually reaches consumers will become clear in the coming weeks.

One thing is certain: with the start of the holidays, refueling in Austria has become more expensive again, and many motorists will now pay closer attention to price differences abroad when planning their trips. The fuel price brake thus remains a central topic of domestic economic and transport policy.
