Full closure of the Hamburg–Hanover rail line: Quality offensive running at full speed

The Hamburg–Hanover connection is one of the most heavily used rail lines in Germany. It is important for long-distance traffic between northern and southern Germany, for commuters, and for freight traffic to and from the Port of Hamburg. On the line, the railway intends to renew and repair tracks, switches, overhead lines, stations, and bridges.

Until now, the section between Celle and Hanover had been primarily affected. Now, regional trains between Uelzen and Lüneburg will also be canceled until the end of the quality offensive. Rail travelers between Hamburg and Hanover must prepare for further restrictions from today onward.

Impact on commuters and travelers

Deutsche Bahn has set up diversions for long-distance and freight traffic. A replacement service with buses and individual train services on partial routes is in place for regional traffic. Among other things, buses are to run hourly between Lüneburg and Uelzen, with additional trains scheduled between Lüneburg and Hamburg during peak hours.

In addition to the ongoing repair work, work is also being carried out on signal boxes and on the railway embankment near Eschede. In this way, the railway is bundling a wide range of construction measures into a single continuous time window in order to concentrate the impact on operations as much as possible.

According to Deutsche Bahn, the quality offensive is intended to serve as a bridge: it is meant to remedy the most urgent defects before the general renovation of the line begins in 2029. The company hopes this will noticeably improve the condition of the affected section and increase reliability in daily operations.

Schedule until July and outlook on 2029

The closure of the entire line means significant adjustments for commuters and long-distance travelers. Anyone traveling between Hamburg and Hanover must expect longer travel times or switch to alternative connections. Freight traffic, which is of central importance for connecting the Port of Hamburg, is also affected by the diversions.

The construction work is expected to last until 10 July. If the schedule is met, the line could be fully operational again during the summer months. Deutsche Bahn has recently stressed on several occasions that bundling the work into this closure period is the priority and that it does not want to extend the original timeframe unnecessarily.
