Hamburg, 15 June 2026

The entire rail line between Hamburg and Hanover is closed to train traffic as part of Deutsche Bahn's so-called quality offensive; long-distance and freight trains are being rerouted, and a replacement service with buses and individual train services on partial routes is in place for regional traffic.

Background of the closure

Construction work on the approximately 163-kilometer connection between the two major cities has been underway since the beginning of May. According to the railway, work on the rail infrastructure is overall on schedule. The measure is part of Deutsche Bahn's so-called quality offensive, with which the company aims to bundle urgently needed work before the line is to undergo comprehensive renovation in 2029.
