Hamburg–Hanover line to be reopened for rail traffic on Friday evening

For regional services, operations were expected to resume from Saturday morning, it was said. Deutsche Bahn expected regular service on the line to begin over the course of Saturday. However, Metronom Eisenbahngesellschaft warned that delays and cancellations could occur in the first hours after the reopening, because the trains first had to be brought back onto the line and to their starting stations.

Significance of the line

The Hamburg–Hanover connection is one of the most heavily used rail lines in Germany. It is important for long-distance travel between northern and southern Germany, for commuters, and for freight traffic to and from the Port of Hamburg.

During the closure, long-distance and freight trains had been rerouted. For regional services, there was a replacement concept with buses and individual rail services on partial routes. Trains operated by Metronom Eisenbahngesellschaft, which depend on Deutsche Bahn's tracks, were canceled over long stretches.

Scope of the renovation

According to the railway, the renovation included the renewal and repair of tracks, switches, overhead lines, stations, and bridges along the approximately 163-kilometer route. Specifically, 66 kilometers of track, 36 switches, and two kilometers of overhead line were renewed. Work was also carried out on signal boxes and on the railway embankment near Eschede.

Final inspections were still pending, including checks of the newly installed overhead lines, the responsible parties said. Only then could the line be fully opened to traffic.

Voices from the companies

Simon Märtens, press spokesperson for Metronom Eisenbahngesellschaft, expressed relief: „Jetzt können wir endlich wieder das machen, was wir am liebsten tun: Fahren." He also voiced the expectation that the line would be less prone to disruption in the future: „Wir hoffen, dass die Strecke jetzt nachhaltiger ist und es weniger Störungen gibt. Vorher gab es ja kaum einen Tag ohne Störung."

Outlook: Regular service and major renovation in 2029

The current closure was part of Deutsche Bahn's so-called quality offensive. With this initiative, the company aims to bundle urgent work before the line is to undergo comprehensive renovation in 2029. The fundamental renewal of the connection is considered one of the central infrastructure projects in the northern German rail network.

The first regional trains are already set to run again on Saturday morning, and long-distance services are expected to run regularly over the line again over the course of the day. According to the railway, passengers should expect possible schedule adjustments in the initial phase, as trains gradually return to their original starting points.

Overall, the closure of the line was associated with significant restrictions for rail traffic in northern Germany. Commuters, business travelers, and freight customers had to switch to buses, detours, or alternative connections over the past weeks. With the announced reopening late on Friday evening, one of the longest full closures of a main line in Germany this year comes to an end.
