Vienna, 05 July 2026
A 93-year-old resident of a single-family home in the Großjedlersdorf allotment-garden settlement in Vienna-Floridsdorf is in custody on suspicion of deliberately triggering a gas explosion that completely destroyed his home in the early hours of Sunday, injuring nine people.
Background
The blast tore through the property in the night leading into Sunday, 5 July 2026, reducing the building to rubble and sending debris across the surrounding allotment-garden settlement. Fire investigators from the Landeskriminalamtes Wien took over the scene on Sunday morning, and the prosecutor's office ordered the 93-year-old taken into custody on suspicion of intentional endangerment ("vorsätzliche Gemeingefährdung"). He is being held under guard in a hospital.
