Gas explosion in Vienna-Floridsdorf destroys family home; 93-year-old resident arrested on suspicion of arson

A Vienna professional rescue service spokesperson described the force of the blast in stark terms. "Die Explosion muss wie ein Raketeneinschlag gewesen sein," the spokesperson said, while another official called the outcome "Es grenzt an ein Wunder, dass nicht mehr passiert ist," given the scale of destruction in a populated residential area.

According to the Berufsrettung Wien, nine people were injured in total. Two had to be admitted to hospital: a 45-year-old man and a 25-year-old pregnant woman who is reported to have fallen on her stomach. Three additional people were taken to hospital for further treatment, including the pregnant woman. The remaining injured were treated at the scene.

Rescue operation

The 93-year-old was found by rescue workers in the basement of the completely destroyed house and pulled from the rubble with serious injuries. He is reported to be in intensive care. Investigators from the Landeskriminalamtes Wien have begun their work at the site, and a criminal investigation has been opened.

The acoustic-locator group of the disaster-relief service (Schallortungsgruppe des Katastrophenhilfsdienstes) located the elderly man with a rod camera and rescued him quickly. "Dabei handelte es sich um den 93-Jährigen, der rasch aufgefunden und Sprechkontakt hergestellt werden konnte," the report noted, indicating that rescuers were able to establish verbal contact with him before he was pulled free.

A rescue dog was also deployed to locate him in the cone of debris ("Trümmerkegel"), underscoring the scale of the wreckage. Firefighters, paramedics and police worked simultaneously in the confined space to extract the man and triage the other injured. The scene was described as so unstable that crews had to move cautiously among the ruins of neighbouring structures.

Fire and police response

The Vienna professional fire brigade deployed 22 vehicles and around 90 firefighters ("90 Einsatzkräfte") to the scene. "Unverzüglich wurde mit den Löscharbeiten begonnen, sowie die beschädigten Häuser und Pkw kontrolliert," the Berufsfeuerwehr said in a statement, confirming that extinguishing work began immediately and that damaged neighbouring houses and parked cars were inspected for further hazards.

Several surrounding properties were damaged by the blast, and at least one car was hit by flying debris. The allotment-garden settlement, normally a quiet weekend neighbourhood of small family homes, was cordoned off throughout Sunday as forensic teams combed the wreckage for the cause of ignition.

Investigators are working on the assumption that the 93-year-old deliberately caused the gas explosion. The legal classification under Austrian law is "vorsätzliche Gemeingefährdung" — intentional endangerment of the public — a charge that can be applied when a person creates a risk of widespread damage or injury, regardless of whether death results.

Investigation

The elderly man's motive remains unclear. Police have not released details of his background or mental state, citing the ongoing investigation. He is described in court communications as the sole registered resident of the destroyed single-family home.

One source initially reported the most seriously affected resident as 94 years old, but the figure of 93 is consistent with the public prosecutor's arrest warrant and with the man rescued from the basement. The discrepancy is likely a reporting error in the early hours after the blast.

Emergency-services dispatchers said the call came in shortly after midnight. Multiple residents of the settlement reported windows shattering, facades cracking and cars being pushed by the pressure wave. Power and gas lines in the street were shut off as a precaution to prevent secondary incidents.

Aftermath and appeal

Forensic specialists from the Landeskriminalamtes Wien are examining residual gas fittings at the site to confirm the technical cause. Until that examination is complete, officials are treating the public prosecutor's working hypothesis — intentional ignition of the building's gas supply — as the lead theory.

The case is the most serious suspected arson incident in Vienna in recent months and has drawn attention to the vulnerability of older residents living alone in detached homes, where a single ignition event can wipe out an entire property and put an entire neighbourhood at risk.

Authorities have asked anyone with footage or information from the night of the explosion to contact the Landeskriminalamtes Wien. The 93-year-old remains in intensive care under police guard pending his transfer into pre-trial detention once medically cleared.
