The German federal government is planning to enable bakeries and confectioneries to deploy employees on Sundays and public holidays for up to eight hours in the future, and also to allow public libraries to open on Sundays.
According to a resolution paper from the black-red coalition, the new rules are to come into force at the turn of the year. The draft provides for amending Paragraph 10 of the Working Time Act so that bakeries and confectioneries may employ staff on Sundays and public holidays for up to eight hours in the future – similar to what is already permitted in hospitals and restaurants. Previously, a maximum of three hours of Sunday work is allowed for production and delivery in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, and up to five hours in North Rhine-Westphalia.
